oh, I'm still on my touch. My contract with telus is up in august 2009.

On a COMPLETELY UNRELATED note, does anyone want a just-over-one-year telus contract? I'll even throw in a used LG chocolate flip.

Sigh...

The idea that playing a video game (which, as Eric pointed out Cho didn't do) would motivate or predispose someone towards something like this while not looking at the callous and often bloodthirsty language and actions of governments, media and public figures is simply empty-headed.

The United States is responsible for a civil war raging in Iraq right now. On Wednesday, nearly 300 people were killed in Iraq with barely a mention in the US Media.

If there's a concern that generations of children are growing up without a moral compass, Step 1 is for people to act as if human life actually does have value. Kids don't need video games to screw them up -- real life is already doing the job well enough.

Cho likely suffered from a mental illness. Unfortunately for himself and 32 others, he lived in a country which enshrines violence and the instruments with which it is performed (yes, guns) in their constitution with as much veracity as the rights to free speech and freedom of religion. A nation which sends children to school hungry but will spend $532.8 billion on their military this coming year.

What I meant in saying that was that we should not allow artists and their creativity to be stifled by those who fear their influence. Art cannot be a scapegoat.

Instead, we (as a society) should be trying to ensure that guidance and care be given to those who need it, including children and mentally disturbed individuals. Those people can't be entirely to blame for their actions if they don't know any better.

Parents, caregivers, teachers, health professionals. Everyone is responsible. Violence is everywhere, sex is everywhere, abuse is everywhere. The key is education. Kids need to be taught to make their own decisions based on a informed moral foundation, so when they play Counter-Strike, they'll realize that it is pure fantasy and treat it accordingly.

And hey, maybe they'll have a little fun too.
