Portfolio: BumpTop

I started working with BumpTop in July 2009 until their acquisition by Google in April 2010. I am very grateful that I was able to work with such a great team and help build a radical, much-beloved product.

Interface Icons

When I joined the team, BumpTop was ready for a UI overhaul. One of the first things I did was to create a cohesive visual style, starting with the UI widgets. For the look of these icons I took cues from BumpTop's 3D-blocks logo (top-left) and its classic light-blue shades.

Radial Menu

Upon seeing BumpTop for the first time, one of its most interesting traits to me was the radial right-click menu. It stood right up there as one of BumpTop's most distinguishing features; I was delighted when I got a chance to redesign it.

Splash Screen, First-Run Dialog, and Thank-You

These are the first things you'd see upon running BumpTop for the first time; the team asked me to give them a friendly face.

BumpTop Mac UI Elements

The OS X version of BumpTop was a complete ground-up rewrite, which meant that I had the opportunity to design everything from scratch – all the way down to startup placeholders for desktop icons that had yet to be loaded into memory, and icon selection highlights.

BumpTop Mac Website

Because BumpTop Mac was a completely new product, it needed a presence on the web that was distinct from its Windows sibling.

Slideshow UI

Once the 3D basics of BumpTop were in place, the team looked to enhance the experience by adding media-centric features such as the photo slideshow. They asked me to spruce it up a bit and include some of the icons I'd been working on.

BumpTop Sharing UI

As BumpTop Windows continued to mature, its focus shifted to include social networking and cloud storage. In partnership with Drop.io, BumpTop was to include a cloud-based filesharing interface. This feature, like many others, sadly never saw the light of day.

HTML/CSS Sharing Dialogs

An early version of the BumpTop Sharing UI included a set of dialogs for configuration tasks. These needed to be coded in HTML and CSS, and the rest of their team had their hands full at the time, so I stepped in and coded them up.
